So I’ve decided that since the end of the year is a time for gifts, it should also be the time to present our favorite free applications for the year.
These are geared towards the kind of work we usually do, involving streamlining CAE workflows and developing custom software for Engineering and manufacturing.
Here we go:
Mesh processing
- Meshlab remains our favorite program due to its many features for editing 3D meshes. Once you get used to the GUI, you realize it is extremely powerful . Different colored layers especially helped us evaluate multiple meshes with very slight differences.
- Autodesk Meshmixer also looks pretty promising, with a friendly GUI for mesh editing.
IDE
- Visual Studio Community Edition is our most used IDE, since a lot of the work we do applies the .NET platform.
- Visual Studio Code is a new addition to our arsenal and a great editor for Javascript projects.
General CAD
- 3D Builder, integrated with Windows 10, is good for quick,simple modeling jobs.
